The Day of Half-Staff Flag Position and Mixed Feelings
Memorial Day starts with the flag of the United States being raised to the very top of the staff and then slowly brought down to the half-staff position, where it usually remains until noon. It is then raised to the top of the staff by the order of the President for the rest of the day. The half-staff flag position remembers more than one million men and women who sacrificed their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who do not let their sacrifice be in vain and decide to rise up their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.
The National Memorial Day Concert is one of the biggest concerts throughout the year and takes place on the United States Capitol’s west lawn. Music is performed by orchestras, and respect is paid to the US citizens who gave their lives for the country.
Many Americans attend one of the thousands of parades held on Memorial Day in large and small cities all over the country. Most of these feature marching bands, the National Guard and other servicemen, along with veterans and military vehicles from various wars. One of the longest-standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, the Coca-Cola 600 stock car race, the Memorial Tournament golf event and several others.
This day always leaves mixed feelings inside. Apart from the joyful occasion of the holiday itself, many catch themselves thinking about hundreds and thousands of those courageous people, who are no longer with us. Those, whom we proudly call Heroes. Those, who earned the respect and love of the whole Nation.
